Internships
Internships are a wonderful part of the CMA program. Our students complete internships over the summer, and senior CMA students participate in internships the spring semester of their final year.
Internships are tremendous opportunities for a students to explore first-hand many different areas of math, science, medicine, dentistry and veterinary. Many professionals have volunteered to allow students to shadow them, and have been fabulous teachers. Real world examples really enhance the studies of CMA students.
The Carroll Medical Academy confirms internships for senior high school students between February and May, but the CMA internship program really begins for Senior students in January when they are trained for two full weeks on HIPPA requirements.
The CMA senior students also have had a rigorous high school curriculum with college level math and science courses.
In February, students begin rotations with math, science, medical, dentistry or veterinary professionals. They are required to spend 25 hours a month (or about five hours per week) with their assigned professionals. Each professional is assigned one student to work with at a time, and each professional is assigned two to four students throughout the four months of spring rotations. The students work with three different professionals for about a month each, and then each student is evaluated by the professional.
Whilte the students are with the professionals, they perform tasks like filing charts or checking blood pressure. It is important that students observe as much as the mentor is comfortable with while still protecting the privacy of patients. We ask that staff not have them do things where they will not be learning about the field (like hauling boxes, emptying trash or running errands).
Each student asks their professional to complete a one-page evaluation form at the end of the rotation. A stamped, self-addressed envelope is provided to return the form to the CMA Program Director. These evaluations remain confidential. Students also keep a time log which must be signed by a designated contact person from the professional's office.
CMA wants to thank the medical professionals who so generously offer their time to our students. We greatly appreciate the opportunities, education and experience they provide our students. A list of professionals who have sponsored interns may be found on the Internship Sponsors page.
Volunteering internships to CMA students is rewarding to both professionals and students alike. Please volunteer an Internship to CMA Students.
